Laboratory Introduction
In Combustion Dynamics and Diagnostics Laboratory, CDDL, in Aerospace Engineering Department at KAIST, we aim to gain a fundamental understanding of nonlinear combustion-acoustic interactions in heavy-duty gas turbine and aircraft engine combustors, using laboratory-scale experiments, low-order thermoacoustic modeling, and machine-learning-based data-driven modeling. Major research subjects include (i) measurements and modeling of cross-talk-interaction-induced combustion instabilities in can-annular combustion systems to understand system-level dynamics, (ii) detailed characterization of combustion dynamics of lean-premixed pure hydrogen-air flame ensembles in association with energy system decarbonization, (iii) experimental investigation of combustion dynamics and exhaust emissions from densely distributed multinozzle methane/propane/hydrogen/air flames (in relation to fuel-flexible operations), and (iv) high-speed measurements of low-frequency oscillations of liquid-fueled pilot diffusion flames using air-blast and pressure-atomization nozzles.
