Admission to Graduate School

Admission to Graduate School

Basics

  • The admission process for the spring semester is as follows: submission of the application form in July, application review and interviews in August, and acceptance announced in September. The admission process for the fall semester is as follows: submission of the application form in April, application review and interviews in May, and admission announced in June. (The schedule may be subject to change.)
  • The number of admission to graduate school (the number of government-sponsored scholarship, and the number of KAIST/general scholarship) is subject to the decision of KAIST every year. KAIST AE selects applicants based on their competency within the pre-assigned quota.
  • Applicants should decide the type of scholarship: government-sponsored, KAIST, or general. The scholarship for admitted students will be decided as a result of the admission process.
Admission process for the master’s degree program
  • The admission process for the master’s degree program has two steps: application review and interview.
  • In the application review, interviewees will be selected based on comprehensive evaluation of academic record/achievement, experience in the research area, academic passion, interpersonal skills, etc. The number of interviewees after the application review may vary, but is usually up to twice that of the finally admitted students.
  • In the interview, interviewees’ comprehension of undergrad courses is evaluated in the five basic AE areas: mathematics, aerodynamics, structural mechanics, propulsion, and dynamics/control. Questions may vary for interviewees with undergrad major outside AE. Currently, five interviewers conduct 1:1 interviews for each basic AE area.
Admission process for the PhD degree program
  • The admission process for the PhD program has two steps: application review and interview.
  • In the application review, interviewees will be selected based on comprehensive evaluation of academic record, research achievement, study/research plan, etc.
  • In the interview, interviewees will give presentations on undergrad/graduate academic record, research achievement/projects, master’s thesis, study/research plan, etc. Interviewees’ academic competency and passion will be assessed by comprehensive interviews based on their presentations.
